Tweed is conservatism, which is always in trend
A fabric invented for servants, which later became a fabric for the nobility.
We love this wool fabric, which is soft to the touch, a little fuzzy and quite stretchy. The fabric of twill weaving impresses with a rich and complex color palette of mostly natural shades, it can be melange (woven from yarn of different shades) and mullinated (made from multi-colored yarn, often with colored knots). There are many types of tweed, let’s consider the most popular of them.
Harris (1) is considered the “ancestor” of all tweeds. Tweed Harris has a rough surface, is very wear-resistant, and is available in rich shades. Most often, warm informal jackets in a sporty English style are sewn from it.
Shepherd’s cell (2) is a fairly dense and coarse material with a checkered pattern of various colors, known in some countries as “pepita cell”.
Donegal (3) is a fine tweed of mainly gray tones with a melange effect, it is characterized by small knots of different colors. Produced in County Donegal in Ireland.
The Christmas tree (4) is distinguished by a characteristic pattern of thread interweaving, most often in gray, brown and green colors. Suitable for jackets and coats. The variegated herringbone subspecies (5) includes additional colors to enrich the pattern.
Covercoat (6). Fashion designers have now turned their attention to this tweed, once very popular in rural Scotland. Jackets and coats are made from fabric in which the warp thread is one color and the weft thread is two colors.
Cheviot (7) is a dense and coarse woolen fabric, the name comes from the Cheviot Hills mountains in Great Britain and the local breed of sheep from whose wool it is produced.
Houndstooth (8) has a complex combination of a checkered pattern of various colors. It is difficult to combine with other things, so it is less popular than other types of tweed.
Bedford cord (9) is a very warm, heavy and wear-resistant tweed with an optical wave effect.
Lace tweed (10) is ideal for sewing suits and dresses in the style of Chanel. A light and voluminous fabric with a lacy structure, the weft threads of which are made of yarn, and the base is made of twisted thread.
Tweed clothes are very comfortable, protect against wind and rain, repel moisture well. Things made of this fabric are endowed with a special conservative charm of good old England, and for this reason they are popular far beyond its borders. In 1954, Chanel created her famous women’s tweed suit, which included a collarless jacket decorated with braid. Nowadays, the famous fabric is experiencing a new boom in popularity. Clothes and shoes are sewn from tweed, various accessories are made, and it is used to decorate the home interior. Tweed is a style that has passed the test of time: ups and downs, oblivion and revival.
